Emily Mester is from the suburban Midwest. She holds an MFA from the University of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program. Her debut essay collection, American Bulk, is a consumer memoir that explores the scarcity mindset of Costco, what Olive Garden says about taste and class, finding solidarity at fat camp, and a family lineage of hoarding and compulsive shopping, among other things.
