Clare Beams’s new novel, The Garden, is forthcoming from Doubleday in 2024. Her first novel, The Illness Lesson, was longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel prize and was named a New York Times Editors’ Choice and a best book of 2020 by Esquire and Bustle. Her story collection, We Show What We Have Learned, won the Bard Fiction Prize and was a finalist for the PEN/Bingham Prize, the NYPL’s Young Lions Fiction Award, and the Shirley Jackson Award. Her short fiction has appeared in One Story, Ecotone, Conjunctions, and elsewhere. A finalist for the 2023 Joyce Carol Oates Prize, Clare lives in Pittsburgh with her family and teaches in the Randolph College MFA program.
